CHAPTER TEN

Loretta gave her statement to the deputies while the couple sat separately in the back of the two squad cars. She handed over her phone and waited while they watched the video she had taken. She told them that she had seen the couple at the hospital in the emergency room but left out her suspicions about their connection to Sammy.

She waited while the first deputy transferred the video and photos to his cell phone and then handed the phone back to her. She listened while the other deputy tried to get a name from the older man who was loudly refusing to answer any questions.

“You are free to go, Ms. Barksdale,” one of the deputies said to her. “We’ll be in touch if we need anything else from you.”

Loretta returned to her car and left as quickly as she could. She had a trunk full of groceries she needed to get home. As soon as she was away from the store, she called Harold and filled him in on what had happened.

“Did you happen to get a name for either of them?” Harold asked.

“No,” Loretta said. “When I was leaving, one of the deputies was trying to talk to the man, but he wasn’t cooperating very well. I don’t think the blonde was much better.”

“Where are you now?” Harold asked her.

“About twenty minutes from home.”

“I’ll meet you there.”

“Do you want to see the video?” Loretta asked. “I can send it to you if you’re busy.”

“You can send it to me, but I still want some of that bread you made.”

“You’re terrible.”

“No, I’m just hungry.” Harold laughed.

“Fair enough. I’ll see you soon,” Loretta said, already excited to meet him.

She quickly called Kelly to check on her just as she was pulling into the entrance of the village. They chatted for a short time while Loretta began unloading her groceries. She rushed to put the perishables into the refrigerator, then went right to her laptop. She quickly emailed herself the photos and video from her phone and waited while the files loaded.

As soon as she had the files downloaded on her computer, she opened a search engine and entered the blonde’s photo into the reverse image search. She waited while her computer did its thing and sighed when she saw that she’d gotten nowhere. Loretta cleared the search and entered the older man’s image.

“Loretta? Are you home?” Harold called from the kitchen.

“In the spare room,” Loretta replied, loud enough for him to hear.

She could hear the squish of his leather work boots on the hallway floor. “What are you doing?” he asked when he stopped in the doorway.

“Reverse image search,” Loretta said.

“I know nothing,” Harold said, turning back down the hall.

“Check the microwave,” Loretta called after him.

“Please tell me there’s bread in there.”

She shook her head and chuckled. When she glanced back down at her computer screen, she froze. “Harold! Harold, come here.”

She heard his footsteps come back down the hall a moment later, but she was unable to pull her eyes away from the screen.
